Wayfinding, interpretive signage and illustration for the Hump Ridge Great Walk in the South Island of New Zealand.

The Hump Ridge Track is a three day loop in the South Island of New Zealand.
It opened as one of New Zealand’s Great Walks in 2024. We were engaged by Story Inc at the concept design phase to create the colour palette, interpretive sign styling and wayfinding design systems.

Vertical pillar designs, wayfinding signs and interpretive panels were created
to provide information to hikers along historically significant parts of the track.

The colour palette took immediate inspiration from the surrounding earth elements - warm rock,
wild grasses, and endless skies - and also reflected which part of the track the visitor was on.

Map illustrations and diagrammatical elements created a sense of location and place throughout the walk.

Corten steel installations were created to interact with the natural environment,
and transport visitors back to a time and place in history.
