Wayfinding, interpretive signage and illustrations for Te Puia.
These interpretive signs were developed for Te Puia / Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley in Rotorua, New Zealand.
The signs serve both a functional and informative purpose - they visually locate attractions for visitors and also provide information about each 'hot spot'.
A set of contemporary patterns were developed from traditional Māori weavings and carvings. The colours of each panel also directly linked to the icons for the wayfinding signs, allowing visitors to easily navigate through the park.
To establish a clear hierarchy for signage, content was grouped into the below categories. Each category had a distinct colour palette, set of photographic imagery, logo, and corresponding pattern.
These signs were produced in vertical and landscape formats. Content ranged from the description of geothermal features, information on the local flora and notes on the various Māori buildings on the site. Over 50 signs were created and installed across the site.
Conceptual illustrations were created to illustrate Māori concepts like Kaitiaki and Manaakitanga, as well as to show traditional Māori stories and legends.
Colour-coded icons were created for all wayfinding signs. This made it easy for the visitor to navigate through the park as well
as link to printed material like brochures.
